HENRICOCOUNTY,Va.—AHenricoCountymotherdiscoveredherSNAPbenefitswerestolenthroughunauthorizedtransactions,leavingherstrugglingtofeedherfamily,asabenefitreplacementprogramnolongerexists.
ToniHallwasshockedwhenshetriedtouseherSNAPbenefitsatthegrocerystorelastweekanddiscoveredherfundshadbeendrained.
“It’snoway…I’mlike,it’snoway,”Hallsaid.“Itriedtousemybenefitsanditwaslike‘insufficientfunds,’andIwaslike,no,IknowIhaveover$500onmycard.”
The$500wasstolenthroughunauthorizedtransactionsatstoresshe’snevervisitedorevenheardof.
HallsuspectsherEBTcardinformationmayhavebeencompromisedthroughanonlineordersheplacedatWalmartafewdaysprior.Amidreportsofbenefittheft,socialservicesleadershavebeenwarningcustomersagainstplacingonlineorders.
