NEWYORK—Fearsofa“generositycrisis”havedoggednonprofitfundraisersformuchofthiscenturyastheyexperiencedprecipitousdropsinU.S.householddonations.TheresultsofanewpollsuggestmostAmericansgaveatleastalittletosomecharitiesinthepastyearbutoffermixedsignalsforthosehopingtoimprovegivingtrends.
Thesurvey,releasedTuesdaybyTheAssociatedPress-NORCCenterforPublicAffairsResearch,foundthataboutthree-quartersofU.S.adultssaytheirhouseholdcontributedmoneytoacharitableorganization.Butaboutone-quarterofrespondentssaidtheirhouseholdhaddonated$0tocharitableorganizations.MostAmericanswhodonatedsaidtheygave$500orless,farbelow“majorgift”territoryforeventhesmallestnonprofits.
