Federal Funding Cuts Causing Major Impact on Numerous Tri-Valley Nonprofit Organizations

As the Trump administration continues to defund nonprofit organizations nationwide, the Tri-Valley is experiencing the effects of federal policy changes here at home.
Two groups, Open Heart Kitchen (OHK) and Sunflower Hill, have lost millions of promised dollars under Congressman Eric Swalwell’s local Community Project Funding (CPF) mechanism. The two groups were chosen as part of the earmarked federal funding for 2025, which supports projects that benefit constituents in areas such as infrastructure, public service and economic development. This year, all congressional requests, including 15 from Swalwell’s office, were pulled from the budget by the current administration.
John Bost, executive director of OHK, said he recently learned that the promised $850,000 from the CPF for its food bank would not be coming and had instead been reassigned to cover immigration and defense programs. OHK provides free meals, groceries and support services to those in need and relies on approximately $500,000 in federal funds annually to make ends meet.
