ThestoryofSSAFA,amilitarycharitythathasofferedauniqueblendofsupportandadvicetoservicepersonnelandtheirfamiliesfor140years,startswithasimpleyetpowerfulletter.  AfterthedeathofMajorGeneralGordonatthesiegeofKhartouminJanuary1885,Major(laterColonelSir)JamesGildeaoftheRoyalWarwickshireRegimentwrotetoTheTimesinFebruary,urgingforfundsandvolunteerstosupportthefamiliesofArmedForcespersonnelkilledorinjuredinservice.  WhenponderingwhattypeofmemorialshouldbeerectedtohonourMajGenGordon’smemory,themajor,whobecameknownasthesoldier’sfriend,wrote:“…whatwouldbemostinaccordancewiththeviewsandwishesofthisgreatmanwouldbethatthegreaterportionofthefundssubscribedshouldbedevotedtostrengtheningtheinstitutions…establishedforthenurtureandeducationofthesonsanddaughtersofallranks,officersandmen,inbothservices”.  ColSirGildeadescribed
